オンライン英会話の冒頭でよく講師に聞かれる質問、”What did you do yesterday?”
あなたは何と答えていますか？
多くの人が”Nothing special,” “I was jus working.”などの回答をしています。
これは、「つまらない回答」です。何の話も広がりません。
講師に会話の主導権を渡したままオンライン英会話を繰り返しても、英語力は上達しません。
発話量を増やし、話を広げて英語でコミュニケーションを取る方法を解説します。
以下の思考で話すことで、あなたの英語力は劇的に向上していきます。
英語的思考で質問に答える
相手は質問をしてきているということは、あなたに興味を持ってコミュニケーションを取ろうとしています。
質問に対して、1～2文で終わることなく、相手が知りたい情報を話すことを心がけましょう。
具体的には、以下の思考で話す内容をまとめます。
質問を理解する
最初に、提示された質問を完全に理解することが重要です。英語で何を求められているか、どのような情報を必要とするかを把握することが必要です。
例えば、以下の簡単な質問を考えてみましょう。
“What did you do yesterday?”
この質問は、昨日何をしたかを尋ねています。従って、この質問に対する答えを考える際には、昨日自分が何をしたかを思い出し、英語で表現する必要があります。
アイデアを洗練する
次に、アイデアを整理し、自分の意見を書き出しましょう。可能な限り具体的な例を挙げ、それらを発展させていきます。いかにスピーディーに思考するかが重要です。そのため、アイデアをすばやく整理することが必要です。
例えば、昨日何をしたかに対する答えを考える際に、以下のようなアイデアをまとめることができます。
- 昨日は、働いているだけの普通の一日だった
- 自分の普通の一日でやるタスクは、○○、○○、○○…
- 働いているだけの普通の一日は、自分にとってどんな日だったか
相手は、あなたの普通の一日がどんなものか知りません。
あなたに興味を持って質問をしてくれている相手に対して、あなたの「普通の一日」を伝えましょう。
文章にして話す
最後に、まとめたアイデアをもとに文章にしていきます。文章は簡潔で明確な文章を話しましょう。文章は間違いがあると正しく伝わらないので、可能な限り正しい文法を使用しましょう。
以下は、例文です。
”Yesterday was a typical workday for me. I started the day by checking my emails and organizing my schedule. Then, I attended a meeting with my team to discuss the progress of our current project. After the meeting, I spent most of my day working on the project and completing some tasks that were assigned to me. In the afternoon, I had another meeting with a client to go over some details of the project. Finally, I wrapped up my day by preparing for the next day’s work and answering any remaining emails. Overall, it was a busy but productive day.”
ここまで詳細に話すことができます。
初めての人でも、これらのステップを覚えることでスムーズにたくさん話がができるようになるでしょう。
英語的思考で詳細に答える
質問を理解する
最初のステップは、提示された質問を完全に理解することです。英語で何を求められているか、どのような情報を必要とするかを把握することが必要です。
例えば、以下のような質問が与えられた場合を考えてみましょう。
“What are the advantages and disadvantages of using social media?”
この質問は、ソーシャルメディアの利用に関する利点と欠点を尋ねています。この質問に対する答えを考える際には、以下の点に注意しなければなりません。
- 利点と欠点の双方について答える必要がある。
- 質問の範囲に沿って答える必要がある。
アイデアを洗練する
次に、アイデアを整理し、自分の意見を出します。可能な限り具体的な例を挙げ、それらを発展させていきます。練習のために、自分のアイデアをメモに書き出しても構いません。
例えば、ソーシャルメディアの利用に関する利点と欠点について考える際に、以下のようなアイデアをまとめることができます。
利点：
- 情報を簡単に共有できる。
- 趣味や興味を共有することができる。
- オンラインでの仕事やビジネスに有利。
欠点：
- プライバシーの問題がある。
- 情報過剰によるストレスや依存症のリスクがある。

文章をにして話す
最後に、まとめたアイデアをもとに文章にしていきます。文章は簡潔で明確にし、正確な文法を意識しましょう。

It can also be advantageous for online work or business. On the other hand, social media can lead to privacy issues and the risk of stress or addiction due to information overload. Additionally, there is a possibility of false or misleading information spreading through social media. Therefore, it is important for individuals to use social media with caution and be aware of the potential risks associated with it.”
この例文では、提示された質問に対して利点と欠点の両方について答えることができています。また、各ポイントに具体的な例を挙げ、文章の流れが明確になっています。最後に、社交メディアの使用に関連するリスクについても言及し、注意が必要であることを伝えています。
次の課題は文章化と音声化
ここまでで、質問に対してどのように答えるのがいいのか、どのような思考でアイデアをまとめるのがいいのかヒントはつかめたと思います。
しかし、例文を見て「こんな英語で話せない！」と感じた人は多いのではないでしょうか。
読めば意味は理解できるけど、話せない人は非常に多いです。これは、英語を話せるようになるプロセスで、とても自然なことで皆が経験します。
また、書くことは出来るけど、話すことは出来ないという人も非常に多いです。
読めば理解できるけど、話せない
「読めば理解できるけど話せない」に相当する人は、まず英語的な話し方で重要な、文章のつなぎ言葉を使う練習から始めましょう。
先ほどの例の中では、以下の赤字の部分です。
”Yesterday was a typical workday for me. I started the day by checking my emails and organizing my schedule. Then, I attended a meeting with my team to discuss the progress of our current project. これらは、話を様々な方向に広げるための「印」になります。
「印」を効果的に使って話を展開することで、まとめたアイデアを聞き手にとってわかりやすく伝えることができるようになります。
書けるけど話せない
「書けるけど話せない」状態の人は、あと一歩です！
英語で文章化することは出来ているので、音声化するための課題を解決することが必要です。
頭の中にある文章をスムーズに音声化するためには、
- 上記の「印」を使っている間に、次の言葉を考える
- または、英語のFillerを使って、考える間を埋める（Well, Let me see, You know, I mean, Basicallyなど）
- 意味の固まりごとに一気に言う練習をする
最初は時間がかかってしまうことはしょうがないので、無言で考えずFillerやつなぎ言葉を使って間を埋めましょう。
意味の固まりごとに言う練習方法は、スラッシュリーディングがお勧めです。
先ほどの例文では、以下のように分けて話すことができます。
“Social media has / several advantages and disadvantages. / On one hand, / it allows people / to easily share information / and connect with others / who have similar interests or hobbies. /It can / also be advantageous / for online work or business. / On the other hand, / social media / can lead to privacy issues / and the risk of stress / or addiction / due to information overload. / Additionally, / there is a possibility / of false or misleading information / spreading through social media. / Therefore, / it is important / for individuals / to use social media / with caution / and be aware of the potential risks / associated with it.”
スラッシュを入れる箇所に正解はなく、「意味の固まり」を意識することが大切です。
自分が途中で次の言葉を考えずに言える「意味の固まり」を捉え、英語を英語の語順のまま話す練習をしていきましょう。
